Dion is a research scientist specialising in plant molecular biology, breeding and genetics, particularly of horticultural crops. His interests include domesticating novel Australian native plants for ornamental horticulture.

He has taught horticultural science in the university sector, acts as a plant breeding consultant and is also a very keen gardener.
