Other spp worth seeking:

Iochroma australis – from NW Argentina in montane forest to 3000m, can exceed 3m tall, with broader, trumpet flowers to 6cm long, their form and rich blue colour has led some to nickname it “the blue Angel’s Trumpet”.

Iochroma coccineum – a caney shrub to 4m from the mountainous spine of Mexico & Central America is another chance surprise lurking in some collector’s gardens, with clusters of 4-5cm scarlet tubular flowers with yellow throats.

Iochroma fuchsioides – forms a 4m small tree from the Andes of Ecuador & Colombia, where local tribes value the plant for its psychoactive properties used in traditional rituals. Its scarlet flowers to 4cm long are broadly trumpet shaped like Iochroma australis, complemented by (unusual for the genus) lush, glossy leaves.

Iochroma warscewiczii (syn I. grandiflorum) – a 3m treelet from Colombia & Ecuador share’s a similar distribution & appearance to I. cyanea, with 6cm long violet-purple flowers.

Some suitable companions from similar habitat and equally compatible in the garden, could include (depending on your climate): angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia), Cestrum spp, species Fuchsia and marmalade bush (Streptosolen jamesonii).
