More information regarding recent breeding programs for improved varieties.

The Australian Custard Apple Growers Association conducts a programme of research and development in conjunction with DPI at Nambour in order to develop new and improved varieties of custard apples particularly those with pink/red skin and flesh by cross-breeding various hybrid varieties with different Annona species (e.g. Annona reticulata and Annona diversifolia) that have red to pink coloured flesh and skin. Some very exciting varieties have been developed but they require further field testing and back-crossing to develop a fruit suitable for commercial release. As this research is funded by the Australian Custard Apple Growers Association (ACAGA) it is only right that the best selections will be restricted to commercial growers but it is hoped that a new red/pink variety with self-pollinating tendencies that has not been selected for commercial growers will find its way into the home garden market
