Bushfires
                                                  are common in certain parts
of the world. We all know that
fires have helped to form the
landscape in many parts of Australia.
But fire is also a natural and
                                                  expected occurrence in parts
of South Africa, and in western
                                                  parts of the United States.

In all of these places many
                                                  plants have adapted their reproductive
                                                  strategies to cope with fire.
If we want to propagate these
plants, we have to adapt our
                                                  techniques to take account of
                                                  the strategies they have developed.
                                                  We have to “play with
                                                  fire”.
                                                We’re going to deal with
                                                  three groups of plants –
                                                  the “seed storers”,
                                                  the “hard coats”
                                                  and the “smoke lovers.”
